Speaking to the Economic Times of India, Ajey Mehta, Microsoft Mobiles’ managing director for India, revealed their strategy and selling point in the sub-continent.
He said Microsoft planned "democratising services" across price points in India, and that they would bring premium features like Bing Search and one Drive Storage to affordable smartphones that could cost even less than $100.
The affordable smartphone strategy is of course a market share grab by Microsoft, who is now a very small player in the Indian market.
"My wish is to bring back Nokia (Microsoft Mobiles) to the top, and we’re extremely well-positioned to do that with our integration with Microsoft as we can offer a far superior experience to consumers," he told ET at the launch the Lumia 730, 830 and 930.
"We need to make the market for Windows phone," Mehta said, adding that the company will introduce more models at lower price points in the affordable smartphone segment.
The Nokia Lumia 530 may already be that device, being rumoured to launch in the US market for only $69, but there are rumours of a potentially cheaper device costing only $48.
Windows Phone has always held a reputation working very well, even on low-end hardware.
