The current WP8.1 photo viewing application does not have many fans, having taken away much of the style of the WP8 app.
Now, according to a job posting, Microsoft is looking to switch things around again, with a new way to “view your photo and video collection in dramatically rich and immersive ways.”
The experience would work not just on phones, but also tablets and desktops, and include features such as image analysis, effects and cloud synchronization.
The effort is presumably to keep up with Google, who’s various auto-awesome photo viewing features has been wowing many for a while now.

We are building new customer experiences to view your photo and video collection in dramatically rich and immersive ways. We are gathering data from various sources and building technologies to help personalize the consumer photo experience.
We are looking for talented developers (SDE and above) to build the best photos experience across all screens, from phone to desktop. You will potentially be working on various layers of the application, from user experience to the backend layers, which include image analysis, imaging effects, database and cloud synchronization layer. The ideal candidate will have:
- Strong analytical and design skills.
- Experience building consumer applications on Windows Phone and/or Modern Windows.
- Excellent problem solving and debugging skills.
- A minimum of 2 years of C++ or C# software and development experience on shipped consumer products.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Experience with the XAML framework and MVVM architecture is a plus!
- A BA/BS in Computer Engineering or Science, or related technical discipline, is preferred.
