Joe Belfiore hopes Universal Apps and Windows 8.1 will help close the app gap

Speaking to Computing.co.uk at TechEd Europe, Joe Belfiore revealed that he is hoping that desktop Windows will help close the Windows Phone app gap.
"As Windows 8.1 in general increases its volume, we see more and more software developers getting engaged on that platform, and that addresses the app gap," he said.
He confirmed that Universal Apps – which uses shared APIs across desktop and mobile to more easily run apps on both – is a "big thrust" for Microsoft’s ambitions in mobility.
"As we get that platform out there, I think we’re going to close the app gap, and you’ll find users that are highly satisfied with Windows Phone, and view it as a perfectly good alternative to iOS and Android."
The one weakness of course of this theory is that there must be a few hundred million Windows 8 desktops, laptops and tablets out there already, but the Windows store still has little more than half the apps of the Windows Phone Store, suggesting no matter how many installations Windows has, it is unlikely to attract developers in droves.
The problem is that developers are flocking to the platform which users actually use – their most personal device, which is their smartphone.

Microsoft Office 365 Will Begin Disabling Support For SSL 3.0 Due To Vulnerability

Microsoft today announced that they are disabling support for SSL 3.0 from December to protect customers from the recently reported vulnerability in SSL 3.0.
We wanted to share details around Security Advisory 3009008. This advisory provides guidance related to a vulnerability in Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) 3.0 which could allow information disclosure. This is an industry-wide vulnerability that affects the protocol itself and is not specific to Microsoft’s implementation. To help protect our customers further, we will be disabling fallback to SSL 3.0 in IE, disabling SSL 3.0 by default in IE, and across Microsoft online services, over the coming months.
Starting on December 1, 2014, Office 365 will disabe support for SSL 3.0. This means that from December 1, 2014, all client/browser combinations will need to utilize TLS 1.0 or higher to connect to Office 365 services without issues.

Microsoft Patents Smart Gallery App For Windows Which Automatically Creates Music Videos From Photos

Recently I came across an interesting patent from Microsoft in which they are proposing a smart gallery app that can automatically create music videos from existing photos. Sounds familiar right? Google has a similar feature in the name Auto Awesome in Google+. Users can use their photos and videos made into professional-looking movies using Auto Awesome. Microsoft’s patent also describes a similar concept in which the system will automatically choose the best photos and videos and create a music video for the user.
Today users have a variety of ways to collect content. For example, users can take pictures and video using a digital camera, a smart phone, and other electronic devices. This can result in a large amount of content. Efforts continue to evolve with respect to enabling users to share and consume both their content and the content of others.
Abstract:
Various embodiments provide a so-called smart gallery that is designed to create a short summary view of a collection of content, such as photographs and video. The content can be prioritized and presented in a smart gallery user interface that includes gallery elements that can be sized in accordance with prioritized content. Prioritization can take place based on whether content is manually captured or automatically captured. Alternately or additionally, prioritization can take place based on content analysis that looks at content quality and/or objects that appear in the content.

Microsoft Begins Development Of ORTC API For WebRTC In IE To Make Real-Time Communications (RTC) On The Web A Reality

Microsoft today announced that the development has begun on the ORTC API for WebRTC, a key technology to make Real-Time Communications (RTC) on the web a reality. WebRTC will allow users to have full Skype experience within the browser! Yes, without any need of a plug-in.
We’ve been actively collaborating with the W3C and IETF to contribute and improve standards like the ORTC API for WebRTC to enable a wide range of features from simple conversations to scalable multiparty video conferences. With the momentum from over 80 participants that represent a variety of browsers, communications experts and start-ups, the W3C ORTC Community Group has issued a “Call for Implementations,” which signals the ORTC specification has reached significant stability. Building on top of the experiences from Skype and Lync and prototyping effort done by the Microsoft OpenTech, we are now working to deliver the ORTC API in Internet Explorer.
The ORTC specification supports the underlying protocols as defined by the IETF RTCWEB Working Group, which enables support for advanced video conferencing technologies such as simulcast and scalable video coding.  We are working with the web community on various fronts to influence how a subset of ORTC objects and methods become part of the WebRTC 1.0 API. This helps to provide a seamless transition from WebRTC 1.0 to a JavaScript object-based real-time communications model based on ORTC (i.e. WebRTC 1.1).

Microsoft Launches New Azure Geo In Austraila

Microsoft launched their newest Azure Geography (Geo) in Australia open for business. The new Azure Geo includes geographically redundant regions in New South Wales and Victoria. This new Azure Geo will lower latency rates and address data sovereignty considerations for Microsoft customers and partners. “From today, our goal is to create Australia’s best and most complete cloud, enabled by world class technology and a world class cloud ecosystem,” said Scott Guthrie.
Microsoft also announced an expansion of its ExpressRoute offering in Australia via its existing global partnership with Equinix and forming a new alliance with Telstra. The expansion gives Australian customers and partners the option to create private connections between the Australia Azure Regions and infrastructure located on-premises or in a colocation environment. ExpressRoute connections do not go over the public Internet, and offer more reliability, faster speeds and lower latencies.

With Microsoft Azure, Office 365 and Microsoft Dynamics, Microsoft is delivering the industry’s most complete cloud — for every business, every industry and every geography. Microsoft delivers over 200 services to over 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses are served by our cloud infrastructure in over 90 markets, globally.

Wide range of benchmarks show HTC M8 for Windows the fastest, Snapdragon 400 as fast as Snapdragon S4

Btekt have run a wide series of benchmarks on the Nokia Lumia 735, 830, 930, 1020, 1520 and HTC One M8 for Windows Phone and have come up with some pretty interesting results.
The handsets were tested using the Antutu, Basemark OS II, Pi Benchmark, Relative Benchmark, Browsermark and Sunspider tests and while the advantage of running a Snapdragon 800 processor was clear, the most interesting result from the test was that the SnapDragon S4 was in many ways comparable with the new Snapdragon 400 processors, meaning one should not choose a newer midrange device over an older dual-core handset simple for performance reasons, and that it would be pointless to upgrade for performance reasons and buy a Snapdragon 400 device.
On the other hand the HTC M8 for Windows with its Snapdragon 801 processr was a consistently good performer, which is another string in the box of the versatile handset.

Microsoft Bing Announces Support Of Emoji Characters In Bing Search In All English Markets

Microsoft today announced that they are adding support for Emoji characters in Bing search in all English markets. People nowadays use emojis more often for expressing themselves in an efficient way. This new Bing update lets them use the same language to search the web.
With this new feature, you can search using your favorite emoji, and Bing will return results based on the semantic meaning of the emoji. But emoji search on Bing can be even more powerful than just finding out an emoji’s meaning.  You can combine them to create more multi-word searches. See the above image for example.

Microsoft Announces Unlimited OneDrive Storage For All Office 365 Customers

Microsoft today announced that they will be offering unlimited storage to all its Office 365 customers moving forward. Microsoft has started rolling this out today to Office 365 Home, Personal, and University customers. The roll out will continue over the coming months. If you want to be one of the very first to get more storage, go here to put yourself at the front of the line. Microsoft also announced that OneDrive for Business customers will get unlimited storage in 2015. Also, Microsoft already offers 1 TB of storage for them.

While unlimited storage is another important milestone for OneDrive we believe the true value of cloud storage is only realized when it is tightly integrated with the tools people use to communicate, create, and collaborate, both personally and professionally. That is why unlimited storage is just one small part of our broader promise to deliver a single experience across work and life that helps people store, sync, share, and collaborate on all the files that are important to them, all while meeting the security and compliance needs of even the most stringent organizations.
We’re thrilled to continue our quest of making OneDrive the world’s cloud storage leader – and, always a key part of the best productivity service with Office 365. We’re all in! Stay tuned for more exciting announcements over the coming months.
